Buying the Dip

Posted on June 2, 2021June 2, 2021 by Dividend Daddy

If you’re anything like me, and I suspect you are, in March 2020 with the market crashing from the initial global spread of COVID-19, you saw value everywhere and were busy scooping up quality dividend paying companies at bargain prices.

Fast forward to Spring 2021, the market has rebounded and then some, and value is harder to find. Looking a bit closer, there have been pockets of better value on dips in the prices of some stocks that were on my watchlist both on the TSX and NASDAQ.

I know it’s all about time in the market rather than timing the market. But when you can do both, all the better right? To be clear, I’m very much a buy-and-hold investor, but if I can pick up stocks that I want to hold at a cheaper price, then it’s a win-win in my books.

So what have I’ve been buying lately on the dip? Below are companies I started positions in recently:

Verizon Communications – I bought 25 shares in this company at $56.44. It’s 52-week high is $61.95.

Score Media & Gaming – I bought 50 shares at $16.68 which was off well off it’s 52-week high of $56.70. If the various legislative efforts to legalize single-game sports betting in various U.S. states and within Canada takes off, I think Score Media & Gaming is well placed to profit.

Intertape Polymer Group – I bought 30 shares at $30.05 which was off it’s 52-week high of $32.88 (not much of a dip admittedly). As it turns out, I could have held off longer as it’s dipped even lower into the low $29 range.

Kirkland Lake Gold – I bought 50 shares of this stock at $40.62 was was a far cry from it’s 52-week high of $76.43. Since the purchase, the stock has taken off and as of June 1st, is trading at $51.90.

Enghouse Systems Ltd. – I picked up 50 shares of this stock at $53.01, which was off it’s 52-week high of $80.91.

I added to positions on recent dips in the following:

Algonquin Power & Utilities – I bought 55 shares at $18.47 which is down from 52-week high of $22.67

Canadian National Railway – I picked up 20 shares at an average price of $127.585 off its 52-week high of $149.44

What have you bought at a cheaper price lately?
